Another scene, I guess, influenced by my time in Snowdonia. Such a beautiful terrain. Not far from where I lived was a picturesque village, nestled in the mountains, called Beddgelert. In that village there was a quaint little souvenir shop dedicated to ‘Rupert Bear‘. For those who don’t know he’s a comic strip character that I really enjoyed the annuals of as a child. Anyway one of the features of those books I most remember are the beautiful illustrations. Simple but magical. There have been several illustrators who have continued the work of original artist Mary Tourtel so I don’t remember if it was her but probably Alfred Bestall, who lived in nearby Porthmadog, who was so greatly influenced by the local landscape.

The steep, forested and rocky slopes interlaced with meandering footpaths, streams and waterfalls create so many enchanted places beauty and magic. I must get back there soon with my camera.

This painting was again painted ‘wet on wet’ using oil paint on canvas.

Oil Painting on Canvas 24″ x 18″

Reminiscent of times on the Norfolk Broads. Many moons ago, in my early teens, I spent two summer holidays on the coast of Norfolk and learnt to sail on the Broads. Unfortunately I have never returned to the area but have memories and impressions of that time. I’d only just finished the painting and hung it up to dry when a friend popped round and straight away thought it was the Norfolk Broads. So that was cool.

The waterways, I believe, are a combination of natural lakes, rivers and flooded peat excavations from the past. I remember the beauty and calm of the place (except when in the wind) and the abundance of wildlife.

Again I used the ‘wet on wet’ technique. A very simple subject only taking a couple of hours but satisfying.

This brings fond memories of one of my favorite places as a child. There use to be an under cliff footpath between Ventnor and Shanklin on the Isle of Wight and there was a point where you can see Shanklin beach through the trees. Of course there would have been crowds of holidaymakers on the sand. Also a couple of piers visible from where I am depicting this view but I like to imagine how our landscapes would have looked if left untouched.

I painted this in oils by the ‘wet on wet’ method. Instead of linseed oil (which stinks the house out as much as I love the smell) I used clear liquid oil paint relying on the white gesso beneath to provide the light. I’ve found that this benefits from the translucency of the pigments for light and uses less paint to attain vibrant hues. It’s the same kind of translucent quality I’ve tried to mimic in the shallow coastal sea.

Apologies for not uploading any new paintings for a while. There has been quite a lot to keep me busy with getting this site launched but hopefully I’ll have more time for painting now. Yey!!! :). Painted this last weekend so it’s still wet and there’s another couple in the process of drying that I’ll post over the next couple of days. There’s also another 5 paintings in various stages I’m looking forward to continuing.

When these paintings are ready I will be posting them on Ebay for auction so if you want to bid keep an eye out for the posts.

Also I will be posting details of how to win a painting in the near future. Basically I will select the winner from individual ‘likes’ on pictures so that way I know that whoever wins gets a picture they like. So put a ‘like’ on any picture you like and you might win it. Anyway I will post more details later.

I hope you like and share this picture. 🙂

Wall Art – Oil Painting on canvas 16″ x 12″

I decided to create this little piece of wall art restricting myself to just blue, black and white oil paint. Again I used the “wet on wet” method. Beginning with a primed canvas I prepared the lower area of the scene with an undercoat of black gesso. When that was dry I painted liquid white and liquid black oil paint thinly in the appropriate areas. After adding touches off blue and blending in I applied white highlights and the stream with a fan brush. I used a palette knife to lift paint where I needed, such as the rocks.

I often got home from work after midnight when I lived in Snowdonia. On occasion when there was a full moon and at most a few clouds in the sky. I’d get home, jump on my motorbike and head off deeper into the mountains.

I’d get to clear country, switch my lights off, pull the throttle back and just fly. The low dry stone walls lining the road on each side would streak by in a silver blur as I glided over the satin smooth tarmac (no potholes there :). The peaks, lakes, waterfalls, trees and shrubs drifted by highlighted in various shades of silvery white-blue and velvet black. I still think of that as one of the most beautiful images in my experience.

I intend to paint a series of acrylic paintings along this theme. I’ve decided to try with acrylic as there is a gel I have with microscopic glass beads in it. The idea is that the beads reflect light in much the same way as road signs at night. Thought it would be quite an effective piece of wall art to have the main features reflecting light in a dim room.

Hope you enjoy. 🙂

Oil on Canvas 16″ x 12″

Although this is in the same theme, “Horse Girl“,  it’s a lot smaller at only 16″ x 12”. Using the “wet on wet” technique I had first under painted the shape of the horse, girl and land with grey gesso. I then brushed on dabs of yellow, minute amounts of crimson and blended towards the white areas. While the background was still wet I highlighted the, still visible, grey areas to add a little depth and detail.

I do like this method of painting and with oils and it’s so easy to correct if necessary. Worst case scenario? Just lift the paint and redo. I can try things out quickly or I have time to stand back and reflect on what I really visualise before the paint dries.

I know I’m influenced so much by my environment. Living near a South facing beach I often witness the beauty of sunrises and sunsets with the sun still visible when low in the sky. Walking along the waters’ edge when the tide is out and the sun is low with the wet sand reflecting the skies above.

The picture depicts a nude woman lifting the gossamer drapes aside as she strolls out on to a marble beach terrace to greet the early morning sun. I created this gallery wrapped wall art as a birthday present for my ex. I had the usual problem where you just can’t decide what to give someone. She’s always liked art deco, has several Vettriano prints (her favourite artist) and figurines and sunbathes nude at the drop of a hat. I only had a couple of days left so used acrylic paint on a gallery wrapped 30″ x 40″ canvas to dry in time.

I’m not well versed in anatomy or art deco but had these influences in mind while painting. Literally the hardest person to extract a compliment from I knew I’d done ok by the elation on her face. She absolutely loves it and it hangs in pride of place in her home. She shows it off to everyone and it seems to have overshadowed her prints by other artists. She jokes I’ve painted her nude from memory which I suppose isn’t that far from the truth but I wouldn’t tell her lol. At least there’s one wall in the world where my work outshines Vettriano. 😉

Not sure if I’ll create any more nude canvas art like this but maybe I’ll print some posters of this picture one day.

One thing I was particularly pleased with in this painting was the way I seemed to capture the glow in the shadows of the body. I like the flare of light on the nets to the left and that I managed to keep the view of the surf through the nets to the right of the picture.

If you enjoy this canvas art at least a fraction of the amount the owner does, then I am happy.

My other favourite hobby is playing Flamenco and Classical guitar. I’ve done a few gigs, professional and charity, but I’d rather stay amateur for now. There are still so many techniques I aim to learn I haven’t enough time to keep a repertoire up to solo standard as well. I would say that my main influence is Juan Martin and it’s well worth attending one of his shows if you get a chance.

The real pleasure for me in playing the guitar is in the struggle and achieving the aim. I like to find something that’s seems impossible to do so if you can it’s so rewarding. Learn something, practice it, achieve it, enjoy it then move on. Now I can take the guitar, find a perfect place in the garden, the woods or the beach and play for hours. There aren’t many instruments that you can play the bass, harmony and melody of tunes and I’d just look silly carrying a piano into the woods. 🙂

My favourite place to play, that I can return to, is on my son’s land in Catalonia. I get up before dawn, make a large mug of tea and make my way to this little glade at the top of a ridge. Sitting on a boulder, the ground, just in front of me, drops steeply away down to a dry gulch far below me. Looking up I’m facing another rocky ridge a mile or so away that seems to catch fire as the sun rises. And there I drink tea and play my guitar accompanied by birdsong and a magnificent scene. Maybe I should paint that!!!! Ahhh such a simple joy

Well… that’s one of my things….

Hope you like this acrylic on canvas picture. 🙂

Surrealism Art – Acrylic on Canvas 30″ x 40″

In the previous post I referred to the approach of creating  an image as a journey. Well I really did go on one with this painting. The original image I started off with in my head was of a stag by a stream. There was going to be a heather-covered slope leading down from the right toward the stag. In the background a waterfall and mist-shrouded mountains. All greens, blues, mauves and earth colors. However…… as you can see I digressed, a bit. 🙂

This really was an unexpected journey for me into surrealism art. Also the predominant colour became red. Maybe I’ll get better. If I try to summon an idea, at will, for a surrealistic picture I come up with nothing.

I’ve noted that if I start with a scene in mind I continue, more or less, in that direction. But if I start off with a subject/figure then the scene can develop from there. I guess the direction depends on how the subject inspires me via my subconscious. I believe that fits the surrealism art definition.

Certainly the various parts of the image have symbolic meanings to me individually and as a whole. I won’t venture to express the meaning as I believe that is a personal view. I like to think that if people like the picture then they will interpret it in their own way. Based on their own experience and journey.

I do love this picture and will never part with it but it has inspired further ideas along this theme. Again I intend to make prints, posters and canvas prints available at a later date.

I hope you enjoy this picture as much as I still do. Follow me if you’re curious to see how, or if, I will develop my surrealism art using this theme.

Horse Girl

Acrylic Painting on Canvas 40″ x 30″

Size of original: 40″x 30″ Other sizes available! Are not horse and dogs described as mans’ best friend? To me this picture is an illustration of that special bond.

Again I have painted this on a gallery wrapped canvas and continued picture over the edges.

I once asked a friend, a contemporary artist, what inspired her. Her reply was that she had no idea. She would just begin by applying whatever colour as she felt there and then. That was the first step of a journey that finished when her creation was satisfying.

I usually start with a shape or form that’s come to mind and the scene takes shape from there. that is my journey.

First I sketched the rough outline of the girl and horse on to the primed canvas. I painted grey gesso undercoat for the horse, yellow ochre for the girl and black for the rest of the foreground. Then I painted and blended the background colours, from the sky to the watery foreground area.

After a few thin layers to build up the light and shadow on the characters it was just a matter of filling in the puddles with reflections and highlights.

I’ve noticed I seem to be drawn to depicting water in many of my paintings. It seems to be an effective way of adding a sense of depth in a picture as well as adding a certain magic. Maybe my subconscious views reflections as windows into a parallel universe.

Which actually leads me, rather neatly, to my next post. Another acrylic painting on canvas called ‘Reflect’.

Anyway. I hope you enjoy this picture and I welcome any kind comments. Well…. who wouldn’t. 🙂
